Week 2

Week Overview

This week focuses on the fundamental unit of all living organisms — the cell. You will explore cell structure and function in Topic 1, then examine how ionizing radiation interacts with cellular components at the molecular level in Topic 2.

Both topics are on the same Module 1 page. Work through Topic 1 first, complete the inline knowledge checks, then continue to Topic 2 on the same page. Afterward, complete the Self Assessment to consolidate your knowledge before the graded Do activities.

Outcomes

Learning Objectives

By the end of this week, you will be able to:

  • Identify the basic structures and functions of the eukaryotic cell.
  • Describe the role of the nucleus and DNA as the primary radiation target.
  • Explain direct and indirect effects of ionizing radiation at the cellular level.
  • Describe the cellular response to radiation-induced DNA damage.
  • Apply knowledge of cell biology to ALARA radiation safety principles.
