Instructional Design

How This Course Works

Every week in SS1000 follows the same four-step learning structure. Each step is designed to prepare you for the next. Students who complete steps in order consistently score higher than those who skip ahead to graded activities.

1

Learn

Read the textbook chapter and work through the Key Points page for the week's module. These are your study materials — none are graded. Take notes. Identify concepts you don't yet understand before moving on.

Learn ~1.5–2 hrs Ungraded
2

Practice

Complete the ungraded Self-Assessment. This is a diagnostic tool, not a grade. Use your results to identify what to review before taking the weekly test. If you struggle here, revisit the chapter before completing Do.

Practice ~30 min–1 hr Ungraded
3

Do

Submit the week's three graded activities through D2L: the Discussion, Interactive Video Key Concepts, and Assessment. Your Discussion initial post is due Wednesday. All other Do activities are due Sunday at 11:59 PM EST.

Do ~4 hrs Graded
4

Apply AI & PULSE

Review the AI and PULSE Key Points, then complete the graded AI Assignment and PULSE Assignment. These apply course concepts to real professional scenarios using AI tools and the PULSE competency framework. Week 5 adds a Portfolio Submission.

Apply AI ~2 hrs Graded

Before You Begin

Student Success Tips

Students who perform well in SS1000 share four consistent habits. These are not suggestions — they are behaviors that distinguish students who finish strong from those who fall behind.

Stay on Schedule

This course moves quickly. Plan your week on Monday. Allocate specific time blocks for Learn, Practice, and Do activities rather than working only when you feel motivated. Don’t let Sunday become your first day of the week.

Learn Before You Do

The textbook chapter and Key Points page exist for a reason. Students who skip directly to graded activities consistently score lower on assessments. Every Learn activity is designed to prepare you for the week’s test and assignments.

Use Your Self-Assessment as a Diagnostic

The ungraded Practice Self-Assessment is not a formality — it is a preview of the weekly test. If you struggle on the Self-Assessment, return to the chapter before submitting graded Do activities. That is the entire point of Practice.

Reach Out Before You Fall Behind

Contact your instructor through D2L Messages at the first sign of confusion or difficulty. A quick message on Monday is far more effective than a message on Saturday night before a Sunday deadline. UMA instructors respond within 48 hours on weekdays.

“In healthcare, waiting too long to ask for help creates problems for patients and colleagues. The same is true in this course. Professional learners act early — they do not wait until they are already behind.”
